Sometimes you jump headfirst into the pool without thinking too much and then doubts arise. That can happen to you when you decide to prepare your own natural deodorant.
It is very difficult to find a deodorant that does not contain an ingredient suspected of damaging health. They contain endocrine disruptors, aluminum salts, antibiotics … The alternative, along with certified organic deodorants, is to make it yourself.
There are very simple formulas (you can even use coconut oil or baking soda, as is), but the fun is to make a product to your liking by playing with the available ingredients.
Do not think that you will need a lot of time for this task. It will likely take less time than it would take to buy one at the nearest pharmacy or drugstore. If you’re in a rush, you can make a powdered deodorant with a teaspoon of baking soda and a teaspoon of cornstarch. Mix the two products and apply them with a makeup brush. Of course, be careful if you later wear a black garment because it can stain you.
SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE COMPOSITION OF YOUR DEODORANT
The great advantage of making it yourself is that you can adapt the proportions of each ingredient. Feeling like you still smell like sweat from coconut oil deodorant? Well, add some baking soda to it. Is the roll-on deodorant gel too firm? You can soften it a bit with filtered water.
Most recipes are so simple that it is impossible to go wrong with small variations in dosage. Inconsistencies or exaggerated consistency can be easily remedied later.
Sometimes you have to adapt the composition to the season. For example, deodorant creams with a high coconut oil content, in particular, liquefy quickly at temperatures above 25 ° C. In summer you could store it in the refrigerator, but it seems more sensible to opt for formulations that do not include this ingredient during the hottest months.

It may happen that the ingredients separate. This happens when you mix a liquid with baking soda or cornstarch, which doesn’t just dissolve. The solution can be as simple as shaking the product before using it. Another idea is to grind the baking soda with a mortar or spice grinder before mixing it with the other ingredients. You can also add more coconut or almond oil to make the mixture more homogeneous.
WHAT IF HOMEMADE DEODORANT IRRITATES ME?
If your armpits are itchy, red, or irritated, you may not feel well in contact with baking soda, an ingredient that is harmless to most. Try to grind the baking soda to the max, but if it still doesn’t stop irritating you, look for an alternative, no-baking, spray-on formula.
The cause can also be an intolerance to one of the essential oils used. In this case, it’s worth trying a different essential oil or coming up with an oil-free formula.
On the other hand, coconut oil can be linked to the appearance of pimples on skin prone to blackheads.
HOW DO YOU AVOID STAINS ON CLOTHES?
Natural homemade deodorant does not cause the typical yellowing of white clothes, which is due to a reaction between the aluminum salts of conventional deodorants and laundry detergents. Another perk of homemade deodorizers!
However, other types of stains may appear, usually white on dark clothing. The solution is to apply less deodorant. In most cases, a pea volume amount or a spray shot is sufficient. If it is not enough, instead of applying more quantity it is better to repeat the application towards noon. In addition, the white stain can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth.
If the composition of our homemade deodorant is very greasy, we can have difficulties absorbing it. Coconut oil absorbs quickly. In contrast, cocoa and shea butters are slow absorbing, but offer longer lasting effects.
